Synopsis

The film captures the stories of seven individuals with trans identities in and around Kolkata as they narrate their tales of love, violence and social acceptance in times of change. Raju, Bini, Rai, Bhaskar, Tista, Suman and Sabir come from very different socio-economic backgrounds. Yet, there are certain interconnecting issues of social acceptance and finding a space in the largely hetero-normative social order in each of these diaries which reflect the larger image of how politics of power operate.

India is going through an interesting phase where socio-cultural structures and sexual stereotypes are being questioned. On 2nd July 2009, in a historic statement, the Delhi High Court held that the Section 377 (drafted in 1860 during the British Rule) of the Indian Penal Code, that made consensual sex between two adult men a criminal offence, was unconstitutional as it violated the right to privacy and the right to live with dignity, that are enshrined in the Indian Constitution. On the other hand, violence and discrimination are still an integral part of the lives of ‘sexually deviant individuals’ such as the hijras, kothis, panthis and other indigenous identities. Homophobia and systematic methods of terrorizing sexual minorities are still rampant. The film captures the tales of love, violence and social acceptance of seven individuals with trans-identities in and around Kolkata, India in the times of change. Yet in the milieu of turmoil and shifting identities, the characters in the film celebrate their sexuality and look forward to a better future, to a society where all are different and all are equal.
